Patrick Brutto is a Certified Metalworking Fluid Specialist (CMFS) with The Society of Tribologists & Lubrication Engineers (STLE) and has global experience with a wide range of metalworking fluid (MWF) producers, including Southeast Asia, Japan and Korea, Greater China, North America and Western Europe. Brutto has proven success in MWF additive development and application (amino alcohols, corrosion inhibitors, biocides, specialty emulsifiers) and direct experience formulating and testing water-dilutable MWFs, including cast iron chip corrosion, foaming, aluminum staining, metal leaching, lubricity (tapping torque), particle size analysis, formaldehyde monitoring and dispersion stability. Brutto is a member of the STLE board of directors and was the winner of the Vic Joll Award - an STLE National Award, in 2018.

The workshop is intended for individuals requiring an improved understanding of water-dilutable metalworking fluids (MWFs) and why they fail, including fluid formulators, engineers responsible for using, managing or specifying MWFs, tool manufacturers, and those supplying raw materials and additives for MWFs.

Learn about fluid problems and their causes, and ways to minimize the risk of failure. The workshop will first review basic information on fluids, water quality, metallurgies, etc., as well as performance factors typically evaluated in the laboratory and their correlation with field performance. The major part of the seminar will discuss failure modes and causes and ways to mitigate risk.

Dr. Edward Becker is a past president and Fellow of the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers, and a long-time member of ASTM International. Ed started working for General Motors at the Cadillac Motor Car Division in Detroit. While at GM, he received his Professional Engineer’s license, and earned an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan through the GM Technical Education program. He retired from General Motors after 30 years of service, mostly in the Powertrain division working on a variety of GM engines, transmissions, and rare earth permanent magnets for electric motors.  Ed then established Friction & Wear Solutions, LLC, a consulting firm dedicated to solving tribology problems. Ed received the Engineering Society of Detroit Gold Award in 2018, has numerous publications in technical journals and handbooks, and is the holder of 9 US patents.

This class is intended for participants who would like to better understand the principles of automobiles and their lubrication requirements.  Attendees should have a good understanding of basic physics and chemistry.
